UCSD GUARDIAN
I graduated from the University
of California, San Diego in 1993. At UCSD I learned the
ropes of journalism, illustration and graphic design while
at the school newspaper, The
Guardian. Starting as a contributing writer I eventually
became Arts & Entertainment Editor where I was responsible
for both assigning writers, editing their work and then designing
the weekly A&E section.
PLUS MEGAZINE
During my final year at UCSD I created the successful Plus
Megazine, an off-campus alternative music monthly, which
featured San Diego artists as well as national bands. From
1992 to 1994 my company, Prime Directive, flourished and
developed with the distribution of Plus.
BILL SILVA PRESENTS
From 1994-1998 I was the in-house artist for Bill
Silva Presents, an influential independent concert promoter
based (at the time) in San Diego. Churning out ads for hundreds
of shows a year throughout the Pacific Southwest is a great
way to master one's chops so, when Bill moved his office
to Los Angeles in 1998, I left to return to sole proprietorship.
HESH ONE'S DESIGN PLUS
In 1998 Design Plus was born. Taking off where
Prime Directive left off the independent company grew into
a graphic design juggernaut by creating and delivering print
ads, tour admats, posters, flyers, billboards, t-shirts and
a bevy of other stuff for a plethora of high profile clients
(and some low profile clients too).
Two
years after starting Design Plus I created the tour art for
Dr. Dre's "Up In Smoke Tour", the
most successful hip hop tour of all time. The art was eventually
used for t-shirts,
tour programs, posters, duffle bags and the tour DVD. I
had to hand draw the tour lettering after Dr. Dre said fonts
weren't "smoky enough".
HESH ONE, INC.
My DIY attitude and raw style (deemed "too edgy" by
Disney after one
job) combined with corporate professionalism to lead
me head first to into designing tour art for more than 100 national and international
tours since my first admat job, Tears
For Fears, in 1995. One of the largest tours was Green
Day's 2004-2005 "American Idiot" tour where I provided
two versions of the tour admat to promoters around
the world.
During my career two venues that have had concert ads for
my clients done by me exclusively have won Pollstar
Magazine's Venue Of The Year award: the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino,
Las Vegas (2001)
and the Hollywood Bowl (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009).
Obviously, these awards are won because I do the ads! *nudge*
GLOBAL ART DISTRIBUTION
Since the creation of Hesh One, Inc. in 2004 I have been
positioned to grow the business in new directions and in
2007 it truly went international with the distribution of
tour admats to Asia, Australia, Europe, Mexico, South America
and the United States for Maroon
5, Fall
Out Boy, Evanescence, Korn and Velvet
Revolver. In 2011 I am continuing to service art for platinum-selling artists to promoters internationally and now include internet banner ads and email blast in addition to traditional print materials.
